County Receives A Grant For Low Impact Development Urban Retrofit Project

LARGO, MD - The Department of Environmental Resources (DER) has been awarded a United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant of $994,100 to support its Low Impact Development (LID) Urban Retrofit Demonstration Project in the Anacostia Watershed.

DER pioneered the application of LID as a holistic and environmentally sensitive approach to treat and control stormwater. LID integrates a range of techniques to modify roofs, pavement, roads, soils and landscaping in order to store, detain, infiltrate and filter runoff. Working with the neighboring jurisdictions of Montgomery County and the District of Columbia, these innovative techniques and practices will be implemented to address stormwater management issues associated with urbanized areas.

"Prince George’s County is honored to receive this grant from the EPA and will continue to do our part to support the regional efforts to clean up the Watershed," said County Executive
Jack B. Johnson. "The commitment to improve the water quality of the Anacostia Watershed is an integral part of my Livable Communities Initiative and will ensure the health and well-being of County citizens and residents."

"This grant would not have been possible without the combined efforts of our inter-jurisdictional partners. We will continue to work together to meet our goals of creating healthier, more livable communities." added DER Director Donna M.P. Wilson, Esq.
