Forensic Services Division

A vital part of the internal operations of the Police Department is the Forensic Services Division. The Forensic Services Division takes the forensic sciences and applies them to the law. The Division encompasses both sworn and civilian personnel in an Administrative Office, the Evidence Unit (Crime Scene Collection), Computer Forensics Unit, DNA/Serology Laboratory, Drug Analysis Laboratory, Firearms Examination Unit, and the Fingerprinting (RAFIS) Unit. The Forensic Services Division supports the policing profession and the judicial system by collecting and processing evidence from crime scenes; analyzing submitted evidence; impartially testifying as to the analytical findings in Courts; safely storing and maintaining submitted evidence until disposition is authorized; thereby, leading to a reduction in crime and more livable communities in Prince George’s County.

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE MISSION STATEMENT
The primary mission of the Administrative Office of the Forensic Services Division is to serve as a liaison and coordinating body between the various Units of the Division and its internal and external customers.

Crime SceneEVIDENCE UNIT MISSION STATEMENT
The Evidence Unit provides 24-hour technical service to the Prince George’s County Police Department and the citizens of Prince George’s County, Maryland in the form of crime scene evidence collection, processing, and examination.

 



Forensic SealCOMPUTER FORENSICS UNIT MISSION STATEMENT
The Computer Forensics Unit (CFU) recovers digital evidence, forensically examines computer hardware, media and devices that fall within the Unit’s area of expertise and provide impartial expert testimony of the analytical results.

 

 

Dna MatchingDNA / SEROLOGY UNIT MISSION STATEMENT
The ACCREDITED Serology / DNA Laboratory provides serological and DNA testing services in conjunction with criminal investigative matters, as objective advocates of the science, the DNA Lab educates law enforcement, state’s attorneys and the courts on the forensic science, its proper use and limitations, providing impartial expert witness testimony in criminal judicial proceedings at the local and regional level.

 


Drug AnalysisDRUG ANALYSIS LABORATORY MISSION STATEMENT
The Drug Laboratory analyzes submitted evidence to determine the presence or absence of controlled dangerous substances (CDS), and reports the findings to the State’s Attorney’s Office (SAO) and the seizing officer, stores evidence securely, impartially testifying to findings in court, and finally destroying the evidence when authorized.

 

Firearms SealFIREARMS EXAMINATION UNIT MISSION STATEMENT
The Firearms Examination Unit’s Mission is to provide professional, unbiased, technical expertise in the forensic firearm and tool mark disciplines.

 

 

RAFISFINGERPRINTING (R.A.F.I.S.) UNIT MISSION STATEMENT
The Regional Automated Fingerprinting System Unit supports the Prince George’s County Police Department and the judicial system by providing the identification of individuals through the use of accepted friction ridge analysis methods and protocols utilized in fingerprint identification and impartially testifying to those findings in court.
